Join SciTrek Secondary as a Classroom Mentor!

We're recruiting volunteers for the 2024-2025 school year to support our SciTrek Secondary program!

Spring quarter Modules are on Waves physics in 8th grade classrooms at local public and private schools and will be held during Weeks 5 and 8 of Spring Quarter. We will be posting sign-up links here for Spring Quarter volunteer shifts soon! Check back at the beginning of Spring Quarter.

Who We Need:

Classroom Mentors (Ages 17-25)
Inspire middle schoolers through hands-on STEM mentorship as a near-peer guide.

Perks:

  • Earn UCSB course credit (1 credit for 30 hours per quarter)
  • Build your resume with valuable experience in STEM education
  • Transportation is provided
  • Connect with peers interested in teaching, STEM, and community service
  • Earn volunteer credit for non-course commitments (e.g., fraternities, sororities)
    • Cannot be combined with course credit

Commitment:

One SciTrek Secondary Module shift in Spring Quarter requires:

  • One two-hour Orientation
    • Learn the science experiment and key concepts you'll be teaching
    • Develop strategies for engaging effectivly with adolescents in classrooms
  • Two classroom visits (2-3 hours per day)
    • Shift times include travel time – transportation is provided from the Chemistry building to the schools
    • You'll work with a team of SciTrek Mentors and a SciTrek Lead, who will support you on-site and handle transportation
